Search Engine Optimization

Your eBay business could scale new heights with just a little effort. Small changes make a big difference in helping Internet search engine users find your listings. Get quick tips for creating search-engine-friendly listings and drive traffic to them for free.

Use keywords
Ask yourself what words people are likely to use in search engines when looking for what you're selling. Pick three to five words and use them in your listing title and description.

Take care with titles
Include the most important keywords or phrases in your listing title as titles are a key factor in natural search.

Get the most out of item descriptions
Your item's description is the most valuable tool when creating search engine-friendly listings. Here are ways to use descriptions to the fullest:

  • Create good content
    1. Describe your item in detail in approximately 200 words.
    2. 5 - 7% of the description should comprise keyword phrases (so in 200 words, you'll want to use your keywords 10 to 14 times).
  • Avoid keyword spamming
    1. Overusing keywords makes descriptions ineffective, violates eBay policy and irritates shoppers.
  • Avoid hidden text
    1. Don't use invisible text as search engines won't pick them up.
  • Vary font strength
    1. Use bold headers.
    2. Use a font size of between 12 to 14 points.
  • Include links
    1. Link to other products, your store and more.
    2. Use relevant link names: "Visit my Store" and "See Other Items" is more effective than "Click here".
  • Use image alt tags
    1. Optimize keywords by using them as image alt tags.
