Ship for Free for a Better Buyer Experience

Buyers on international eBay sites like the US, Australia, the UK and Europe are often concerned about how long it takes to receive items purchased from Southeast Asia.

However, you can leverage shipping to benefit your business by offering to ship items for free.

Shipping for free can improve the performance of your eBay business. Data collected from Southeast Asian sellers who adopted free shipping from January to December 2009 shows they experienced:
Buyers rated sellers who shipped for free an average of 0.2 points higher on their Shipping & Handling Cost DSR.

Free shipping listings ranked higher in search results compared to listings which charged for postage.

Sellers enjoyed improvements in sell-through rates of between 33% and 80% on their free shipping listings.

Auction listings with free shipping tended to end with higher selling prices, increasing profit margins.
eBay partners with you in your efforts to provide a better buyer experience. We ensure your free shipping listings enjoy the higher exposure and recognition they deserve.
Most buyers on eBay use the default sort order for search results – Best Match. In Best Match, listings which offer free shipping always appear before listings which charge for postage.
Buyers can no longer search for items by price alone, but instead have the option of sorting listings by their total costs, inclusive of shipping. Listings which offer free shipping will also enjoy competitive placement in this search option.
When leaving detailed seller ratings, buyers are reminded if an item shipped for free, so they are likely to give a higher rating for Shipping & Handling Cost.
Make free shipping work for your eBay business:
  • For auction listings, offer free shipping with a low starting price for items you know will fetch a high price eventually.
  • For fixed price listings, offer free shipping on lower priced items where additional postage costs may hinder buyers from buying.
  • Think loss leaders – you may incur some costs when shipping for free, but you’ll probably make up the loss from the additional traffic coming to your listings and Store.
